EPOBIO and BioMatNet were funded by the European Commission from November 2005 to December 2007. Although the BioMatNet website will longer be updated, it will remain online as a resource for as long as possible. EPOBIO: Realising the Economic Potential of Sustainable Resources - Bioproducts from Non-food Crops brought together world-class scientific and industrial expertise to identify areas for further investment in plant science research in order to realise the economic potential of plant-derived raw materials with long-term benefits to society. BioMatNet was the activity of the EPOBIO project that made available the results from RTD projects supported by the European Commission in the area of Biological Materials for Non-Food Products (Renewable Bioproducts). It included final project results from the Fifth and Sixth Framework Programmes (FP5/7), FAIR Programme (FP4) and previous programmes, as well as ongoing research from the Sixth and Seventh Framework Programmes (FP6 and FP7). In addition, it assisted the European Commission in disseminating information about its Action Plans, Directives and the funding opportunities available under the Seventh Framework Programme. CPL Press was responsible for the design and day to day management of the EPOBIO website and underlying databases as well as production of EPOBIO publications. The extensive database found on the BioMatNet website has been created by CPL Press over the last 20 years and has been available online since 1996. CPL has been responsible for all aspects of BioMatNet from collecting project reports and data, converting these to a common format and promoting them via the website. Related tasks carried out for the European Commission by CPL Press include reviews of Non-Food Projects funded under ECLAIR, AIR, FAIR and FP5.

Note: this website is currently under development - it is expected to go live in early 2007 following approval by the Biofuels Technology Platform Steering Committee.
The European Biofuels Technology Platform (BFTP) contributes to: the development of cost-competitive, world-class biofuels technology; the creation of a healthy biofuels industry, and; the deployment of biofuels in the European Union through a process of guidance, prioritisation and promotion of research, development and demonstration (RD&D).
CPL Press is the member of the BFTP Secretariat responsible for the design and day to day management of the BFTP website as well as the public face of the Technology Platform.

The overall objective of the T@W project is to undertake thematic promotion of RES-e, RES heating and cooling and Polygeneration (Sustainable Energy Technologies, SET) at emerging Emission Trading Scheme markets in EU (EU ETS) and CDM markets in Asia. The T@W action aims to exploit Framework Programme results at these markets, thereby bringing SET to the market. Hence the short title: Technology at Work - T@W.
CPL Press is responsible for the promotion and dissemination activities of the T@W project including design and day to day management of the T@W website.
The Intelligent Energy - Europe Programme (IEE) addresses key energy challenges of the European Union:
The ManagEnergy initiative, funded as part of the IEE programme, aims to support and encourage local energy action through networking, workshops, training and other events, as well as to assist the European Commission in disseminating information about its Action Plans, Directives and the funding opportunities available under the Intelligent Energy - Europe programme. Education forms an import part of local action, so the ManagEnergy website also includes an educational section (developed by CPL) which includes Flash animations, downloadable worksheets, interactive games, e-postcards, and an extensive photo gallery aimed at two age groups (7-11 and 12-16).
The first IEE programme ran from 2003-2006. The second IEE programme will run from 2007-2013 as part of the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP). Further information about both these programmes can be found on the ManagEnergy website.
The Sixth and Seventh Framework Programmes (FP6/FP7) provide funding for fundamental research, demonstration projects and training, as well as support activities.
EPOBIO encompasses and builds on the foresight and the foundation established during 2004/2005 by the US/EC Taskforce in Biotechnology Research - Plant-based bioproducts: creating value from renewable resources.
The BioMatNet website includes details of projects funded under FP6, as well as final project reports from earlier framework programmes. In addition it assists the European Commission in promoting funding opportunities for research relating to the non-food use of crops for production of renewable bioproducts, including biofuels.
The Biofuels Technology Platform is one of a number of Technology Platforms created under the Sixth Framework Programme. It cooperates with other Technology Platforms and Mirror Groups, as well as initiatives such as EPOBIO, to help the European Commission develop its vision for Renewable Energy, Biorefineries and Renewable Bioproducts, as well as the Strategic Research Agenda under FP7 and beyond.
T@W assists in promoting Sustainable Energy Technologies developed in Europe. The T@W action aims to exploit Framework Programme results at the EU Emissions Trading Scheme markets in Europe and at the CDM markets in Asia.
The ManagEnergy initiative aims to support and encourage local energy action through networking, workshops, training and other events, as well as to assist the European Commission in disseminating information about its Action Plans, Directives and the funding opportunities available under FP7.
FP6 ran from 2003-2006. FP7 will run from 2007-2013, with the first calls expected in early 2007. Further information about these programmes and details of Partner Search services can be found on the ManagEnergy and BioMatNet websites.
Both the ManagEnergy and BioMatNet websites contain details of funding opportunities available through EC programmes, include IEE and FP7. These sites also include details about EU Policy, Action Plans, Directives and legislation related to Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (ManagEnergy), as well as Renewable Bioproducts and Biomass and Bioenergy (BioMatNet). Further information relating to Liquid Biofuels can be found on the Biofuels Technology Platform website.
The ManagEnergy website includes a Partner Search service that was rated as very useful in a recent survey on the site. You can currently add or search for details of partners for FP7 and IEE2. A Partner Search service will also be added to the BioMatNet website in early 2007 in preparation for the first FP7 call.
A Partner Matching service is currently under development as part of the T@W project. This will enable EU ETS companies interested in participating in projects to register with T@W and receive contact details for suitable technology and service providers. It will also enable those interested in participating in a CDM project to connect to relevant technology providers and other interested partners (e.g. ETS companies). In addition, it will be possible to search an online database of Technology and Service Providers.
The European Biofuels Technology Platform aims to assist the European Commission in targetting strategic research and policy in order to take advantage of market opportunities for Biofuels. The Technology Platform is industry led and intends to involve all stakeholders in the decision making processes.
EPOBIO also aims to identify areas for strategic research in renewable bioproducts by identifying key flagship areas of potential for new technologies and materials. The first three flagship reports, discussing Cell Wall Saccharification, Alternative Sources of Natural Rubber and Production of Wax Esters in Crambe, were published under the CPL Press imprint in November 2006.
The T@W project aims to promote Sustainable Energy Technologies (SET) developed in Europe, as well as to support the integration of SET within the EU Emissions Trading Scheme markets in Europe and at the CDM markets in Asia, through project brokerage.
CPL Press has produced a number of reports for the European Commission including reviews of projects funded under ECLAIR, AIR, FAIR and FP5, as well as assessment studies for the EC and national governments covering topics including bioethanol, sweet sorghum, bioconversion and electricity from biomass and waste.
The ManagEnergy website contains several hundred case studies describing local and regional energy action from throughout Europe. Fifty of these have been identified as Good Practice projects that demonstrate a positive contribution to energy efficiency and use of renewable energies in Europe and are suitable for replication by energy actors at regional and local level.
Case Study examples involving companies governed by the EU ETS, including CDM and JI projects, will be added to the website T@W and promoted at T@W events as the project progresses. In addition, T@W aims to develop a brokerage service that will be available on the website and at partnering events. This service will aim to match Sustainable Energy Technologies (SET) providers with EU Emission Trading Scheme companies and potential CDM and JI projects.
